Filter Coffee machine August 21, 2010 Ronald D. Warren (Guisborough, Cleveland UK) This unit works very well as a standard filter coffee machine which is all I wanted. My suggestions for improvement would be....it should be available in a choice of colours, it should take more water so it could make more than four cup fulls ('10 cups' is true only if you drink out of egg cups!!!) ....and finally it should have a wider opening for putting in water. By the way it is essential to put in a paper filter unless you like a little mud in the bottom of your cup!!
But as I said at the beginning it does a good job and I can live with its very minor short-comings.........Ron.
1st Coffee Maker and Perfect results every time August 10, 2010 Richard Thomas (Bradford,UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While this is my 1st coffee maker as I only started drinking coffee 2 weeks ago
It is perfect does the job very well and is designed well also and looks nice
very quiet and doesn't dribble water down the back when the top is opened.
It did have a smell when 1st used but this smell went after the 1st wash through with water and I've not smelt it since.
Delicious coffee, but ostentatious design for the biggest bear! August 10, 2010 Lady Fancifull (London UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A BIG warning for those of you with a spatially challenged kitchen!
The product specifications on this, copied and pasted from the Amazon listing are :
Product Dimensions: 15.2 x 15.2 x 7.6 cm ; 137 g I have absolutely no idea what these measurements relate to (possibly the coffee grinder which apparently some people buy, after having bought this??) but they are certainly NOT the specs of this big beast.
So, do you have the room for something that is 31cm high and has a lid which lifts up (another 20 cm in height to allow for the filter etc to be taken out for cleaning, is 26cm long and 23cm wide, and with the cup measure on the main machine only visible from one side?
I have absolutely no idea why this has been made so large, and the base so CURVY - as again, this can't be snugly fitted against a wall - it will always take more space around itself than it needs to. I am having to suffer for my coffee habit by losing valuable worktop space. Design wise, this is overblown and ostentatious, rather than sleek and elegant. It shouts LOOK AT ME and rudely elbows neater slimlined items out of the way.
Still, I've given it 4 stars, as sadly, I can't find a more modestly sized filter coffee maker at the Delonghi's modest price.
I'm a bit of a coffee nut, and over the years have moved from jug/cafetiere method to making coffee in a Bialetti Moka Express Espresso Maker, 3 Cup, as the method of sending boiling water upwards through the coffee gives it a stronger and more robust taste than the 'making it like tea' method of the cafetiere.
However, a few weeks ago I stayed in a holiday let where there was a filter coffee machine making coffee by dripping heated water slowly down through the coffee (that is this method) And I have to say I was seduced by the taste - the coffee I used in my Bialetti tasted completely different in this method - rounder, smoother, fuller. Utterly gorgeous. Hence my purchase of this machine. Alas the much better designed (smaller, though still a '10 cup' model) slim lined, no wasted space machine in my holiday let has clearly been superseded by a new design which wants to catch the eye and be greedy of space.
The Delonghi has (fortunately) won me to its ungainliness because its giving the taste sensation, and is a great price.
I have to say I didn't notice the smelly plastic some others have flagged up - this does seem to be curiously variable, and I wonder if it is due to particular batches?
I concur with the rather weird quantities which don't match up, but, like other reviewers I measure the precise number of cups/mugs I need - and pour that into a spouted jug, and tip that into the machine (its rather silly curved tank means tipping the mug straight in can cause spills)
I'm sure if you want to make several cups to keep warm on the little hot-plate, the temperature won't be too outrageously hot to burn the coffee, but for me, I'd make each cup fresh. It doesn't take long to make, and there's no doubt that 'stewed' coffee has a much less roundly alive taste than 'just made'
Final word of warning on this overlong review - if you live in any sort of hard water area, really crucial I think to use a water filter of some sort - otherwise, the manufacturers suggest you need to do a descale after every 40 'goes' - so even on 1 cup of coffee per day that's less than every 6 weeks.
Delonghi (do a websearch for Delonghi spares) do sell replacement glass jugs for this model, should you have an unfortunate washing-up accident!)
And, yes the '10 cups' will be about 6 mugs, the 'cups' are clearly those dinky little elegant after dinner sized, not a robust long shot breakfast mug!
Great value, great coffee August 8, 2010 Jane88 Bargain machine: makes great coffee, easy to use (apart from mismatching of measurements on jug and water compartment on machine as others have pointed out, but easy to adjust to after first use!). Definitely no stench of plastic with the one I have! A great substitute for a cafetiere: less hassle and no of the extra functions that you could pay a bit more for but that I personally wasn't bothered about.
Second De'longhi ICM2B August 6, 2010 Denise This was a replacement filter machine of the same model as the last one had stopped working after a couple of years intensive use. It is easy to fill, the coffee is held at the right temperature and doesn't taste stewed at the end of the morning.
