Cheap, cheerful, and it works! July 26, 2010 Greg Wallis My old grinder broke spectacularly and I simply wanted a cheapish replacement, as my needs are simple: put beans in, press button, grind coffee, empty out. So I clicked through the alternatives offered by Amazon and saw this Wahl grinder that seemed to fit the bill. The reviews, overall, seemed good and the price was enticingly low, especially if you factor in free delivery.
It arrived within three or four days and was smaller than I had anticipated but, in many ways, that was advantageous. The grinding mechanism itself still perplexes me, as I can't figure out how it works -- the "blade" is completely blunt yet turns coffee beans almost instantly into a very fine grind; just perfect. I like my coffee strong and I think you'd be able to make 4-5 strong cups from the amount of beans you could fit into the stainless steel bowl at the top of the machine.
Simple to clean, you only need to wipe the inside with some kitchen paper or a damp cloth, and it does everything it says on the box. I use it almost every day and would expect it to last me a couple of years if treated with respect. So far I would have to say it's pretty much perfect and, at the price, very much a bargain. Heartily recommended.
Quiet Grinder July 20, 2010 Mr. R. H. Redwood (Yorkshire, UK) The grinder was received well packaged and timely. The brushed-satin stainless-steel finish and black palstic housing looks good in the kitchen amongst other equipment and the design is modern and sophisticated. Noise levels from other grinders I have owned have been high but this mini grinder was refreshingly whisper-quiet and it has had no problem grinding coffee on the occassions I have used it.
There are two flaws in functionality. The first is the grinding area itself. Grinding coffee beans for a standard filter machine left the grounds piled very high, so it makes more sense to invert the grinder and tip the grounds into the domed plastic cover cup to tip into the coffee machine / percolator. Being domed, you cannot then put the cup down anywhere due to the curved design. It would make more sense to have flattened off the top for better functionality. The second design problem is that when loading the coffee grinder, the plastic cover top has to be screwed into place fairly precisely. A lock symbol has to be aligned with a very small triangular mark on the plastic housing. This isn't difficult.... just not very obvious.
The handy cord storage merely means wrapping the electric cord around a central core underneath the unit, leaving the last little bit holding the plug hanging loose. It's not ideal but much more convenient than my last grinder that had no cord storage at all.
All in all, an excellent, efficient, quiet grinder that does the job and looks good.
Grinder July 16, 2010 roy67 Unable to give you a fair view as I have not used the item yet.
Cheap, efficient, grinds nuts down to crumb size but creates a bit of a paste July 15, 2010 Cybergal (England) I bought this for grinding nuts down into crumbs to use in baking cakes in place of flour. Having previously spent ages laboriously crumbing nuts by placing them under clingfilm and bashing them with a meat hammer or rolling them with a rolling pin, I decided to invest in a grinder..
the reviews for this one were good and at the low price it was worth trying out.
So far I've only used it once, for grinding walnuts into crumbs. The capacity isn't very big so for 250g of walnuts I had to do them in 2 batches. There is no settings feature so you just press the big black button to turn it on and watch through the clear lid until you've got the result you want, then release the button to turn it off. The blades are very sharp and the walnuts were indeed ground down to tiny sand/crumb size, but the crumbs were not loosely packed like breadcrumbs but rather in a paste-type form like wet sand. From what I've read in other reviews this is due to the oil in the nuts. Still, it worked for me, I scooped out the paste and loosened it up a bit with a fork so I could sprinkle it into my cake tin.
Cleaning it is slightly tricky.. the device doesn't come apart so you can't rinse it under a tap. Instead I used a napkin to wipe the inside clean, but you have to be careful to avoid the sharp blades. You also have to clean the rim where the lid goes as crumbs can get in there.
Overall it's not perfect, which is why I only gave it 4 stars, but it does the job a lot better and easier than if I didn't have it so I'm pleased I bought it. For the low price you can't lose. I've never had an electronic grinder before so I can't compare to other products.
Also, it's nice vertical cylinder shape means it doesn't take up much space, and it looks really nice and of good quality material.
Good value July 12, 2010 amatuer cook Wasn't to sure about this as usually try to stay away from celebrity products but works very well for grinding dry spices. A blessing after using a pestle and mortar for the last year.
