Excellent espresso December 14, 2008 A Googly (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this machine for several months and in my opinion it produces a very good shot of espresso. Having worked as a barista in New Zealand (where, perhaps surprisingly, the standard of coffee making is amongst the best in the world), I hope I have a good idea of what to look for. The most important aspect is the speed with which the shot is delivered and the crema. On both these aspects, with the right grind of coffee, the Krups K2 is excellent. The Starbucks and Costas have lead to a belief in the UK that the milk should be 'foam' or 'froth'. No: what *should* happen when heating the milk is that the proteins are 'stretched' and some of the milk in the jug gains a different density and texture. You are never looking for anything foamy, there should never be any bubbles, even in your cappuccino. For this purpose the steam wand on this machine is woefully inadequate, but then again only a commercial machine can ever deliver consistent pressure for a long enough period. (By the way, if you go into a coffee shop and see the barista pouring your shot first and then heating the milk, tell them to start again! Probably the best coffee I've had in the UK is at the Monmouth Coffee Company in London.) For those who've had problems with their machines, as some others have said this is most likely down to using the wrong coffee - look for ground coffee that is specifically for espresso machines; having coffee stuck on the head or on the rim of the handle; and/or too much/not enough coffee. There's a reliable measure in the box. So, with my barista's hat back on for a few moments each morning, I'm very happy with this machine. Recommended.
Fantastic Machine November 25, 2008 Mr. T Absolutely Brilliant. After getting hooked on various other methods of making coffee i decided it was time to get a proper machine and this is has ticked everyone of my boxes! I'm already looking forward to making another coffee. Makes espresso's with a perfect and wonderful Crema everytime (providing you do as the manual says) and the cappucino frother is great also. Its easy to clean (like most im sure) and wasn't any noisier than expected. The top heating plate is a nice touch but only really comes into effect once the machine has been on a while. Definitely a great machine to start with and so was awesome for me.
Just Awful August 4, 2008 TC 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I cannot emphasise enough how disappointed I was by this product. I bought three machines from two retailers, and each time it didn't work properly: the water didn't go through; the machine leaked; it was far too noisy; it burnt the coffee grains. It is not that I couldn't use the machines properly - both companies accepted returns, and one retailer tested and and agreed the machine was broken - it is simply the case that the machine is of particularly poor quality. I'll never buy Krups again.
Good machine June 24, 2008 M. Chapman (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Had one of these for a couple of months now and use it most days. It's very good, producing good hot coffee and frothed milk (Coop organic milk works best for me). I've had no problems with leaks described elsewhere. The only points to watch are that the frother is very noisy sometimes (other days it's fine) and also that there is a tiny pin-hole in the lower end of a short hollow plastic tube in the top of the rubber frother moulding. This tube and pinhole allow a controlled amount of air to be drawn in to mix with the steam to make the milk froth. If the pinhole gets blocked, then you get hot milk, but no froth. The pinhole gets blocked easily if the milk froth reaches the top of the frother and gets drawn in to the hole. This pinhole is hard to clean (hard to remove the plastic tube), but if it's kept clear everything works fine. It's easier to keep clean (with a pin) if the plastic tube is pushed back into the moulding with the pin-hole at the top.
Very good for the money February 20, 2008 Mr. Simon M. Collins (Reading, UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this espresso maker recently to replace an ageing Russell Hobbs that I inherited from my Mum. I found it a good buy for the price. As stated previously even on the first cup (after two cleaning run throughs as per manual) it produced a lovely rich crema. It also takes very little time to actual produce the coffee. At first attempt it was noisy but it was the pump trying to take water from the tank which wasnt seated properly - as its removable you have to make sure you press it down securely so it engages the feeder pipe. Everything is sturdly made and to those that had leaks you are a) doing something wrong or b) have a dodgy one. I used my favourite illy ground espresso coffee and no problems. I tamped the top and had no leaks doing this. Also as for someone who criticised the manual, Im guessing you didnt get the same one as me as it was very easy to read with plenty of diagrams (at the front) so I really didnt find a problem here. Yes a few words were mis-spelt but it was obvious what they meant.
